Rotating vs fixed partners

Rotating partners is the classic social round-robin. The generator minimizes repeat partners and repeat opponents so a 12-player, 6-round evening feels varied instead of predictable. Byes rotate fairly across the roster. No one sits out three rounds in a row.

Fixed partners keeps teams together across every round and rotates them against each other using the circle method. Use this for team leagues, husband-wife nights, or any format where the pairing matters more than the mixer. Enter names two at a time, rows 1 and 2 are Team 1, rows 3 and 4 are Team 2, and so on.

How byes work

When you have more players than court capacity (courts × 4), the generator gives byes to whoever has played the most. That keeps the games-played count roughly even. A real problem on drop-in nights with 11 players and two courts. The schedule tells you exactly who sits out and when, so you can post it on the wall instead of eyeballing it.

Common mistakes

• Setting too many rounds for the player count. 6 players × 6 rounds means partners repeat fast.
• Ignoring byes. If (players ÷ 4) isn't clean, someone is sitting. Plan it, don't argue about it.
• Printing at the last second. Do a preview: schedule → Print / PDF → check the header and page breaks before you hit go.
