How each format plays
King of the Court stacks the strongest four on Court 1 and seeds the rest by court. After each game, Court 1 winners defend the throne together. The winners from Court 2 rise up to challenge them. Everywhere below, losers drop to the next court down and pair with the winners rising up from beneath them. Losers on the bottom court cycle to the bench. Within four or five rounds, Court 1 is the highest level in the room without you doing any manual seeding.
Speed Mixer runs the clock, not the score. Every round is a fresh partner pairing on a fixed timer (10 to 12 minutes is typical) with a break between rounds for water and score entry, and a last-point warning so nobody starts a new rally with 30 seconds left. Use it when the goal is meeting new partners, not competitive standings.
Social Rotation is the format for drop-in nights that need to feel fair. The generator minimizes repeat partners and rotates who sits out so nobody watches two rounds in a row.
Which format when
- Wide skill range in the room? King of the Court sorts itself.
- Meet-new-people night? Speed Mixer. The clock keeps everything moving.
- Consistent group, no drama? Social Rotation.
What's inside PicklPass that isn't here
- Live standings and public scoreboards. Standings, tiebreakers, player pages, and a share-a-link leaderboard for every format, not just tonight, the whole season.
- DUPR ratings, synced. Every player's rating pulls from DUPR on signup and refreshes automatically. No CSVs.
- Saved rosters and weekly recurrence. Set the night up once. Players sign themselves up, week after week.
- Public court board. A URL players can pull up on their phone to see which court they're on.
- Seven more competitive formats. Numbered Round Robin, two Ladder League variants (4-player/3-game and 5-player/4-game), Up/Down River, Pod Promotion Leagues (9-player pods across 2 courts), MLP Team Play (teams of 4), and Trios League.
Common mistakes
- Running King of the Court with fewer than 8 players. There's no room for the format to sort skill.
- Setting Speed Mixer duration too long. 10 minutes with a 60-second warning is the sweet spot.
- Skipping the bench rotation on Social. The same two players end up sitting three rounds.
