Why screening matters

A 3.2 in a 3.5+ league isn't a moral problem, it's a bad night for everyone at the court. Screening ratings before you accept signups keeps your sessions on-level, protects the paying members you built the league for, and skips the awkward mid-season "we need to move you down a division" conversation.

What each rule does

• Minimum rating is the floor: anyone below it fails the check.
• Maximum rating caps the top end. Use it for skill-band leagues (3.0–3.5, 3.5–4.0).
• Rating tolerance is the grace band on either side. A 2.90 with a 3.0 floor and 0.25 tolerance lands in "review" instead of "fail", a human decision, not automatic rejection.
• Minimum reliability % filters players whose DUPR rating is based on a small number of matches. In DUPR's model, reliability tracks how confident the rating is. 60% is a common floor for competitive play.

Common mistakes

• Setting minimum reliability without any tolerance, new players get auto-rejected on day one.
• Treating "review" as "fail." The review bucket is your judgment call, not the tool's verdict.
• Screening only the min rating and forgetting the max. Uncapped upper end kills competitive parity.
